How can I help from my couch? Part 2

12 days ago I wrote my last post: "How can I help from my couch?" in which I talked about building Sponsor A Quarantine in a weekend and raising over $2,100.

I'm truly baffled that I haven't published anything since then. It simultaneously feels like just yesterday that I wrote that post and also like 14 years have passed since then.

Almost immediately after completing the work for the hackathon project, I found a similar project and jumped right in to volunteer my time. This time though, there's a much larger and coordinated effort.

The new project is called The $1k Project.

In the span of about 8 days since the project officially kicked off, over 20 of us have been helping as a distributed team of volunteers who came together around a simple idea:

Let's match sponsors with the families most in need to give them $1k / month for the next 3 months.

In the course of the past week:

  • 100+ families apply to be sponsored
  • 35 people have committed to sponsoring families
  • $100k has been committed to be donated to families
  • 20 families have already been funded with their first $1k check

The most amazing part is that this project is just starting to pick up steam. People never cease to amaze me. Even in the most challenging of times. Seeing our team come together like this and also the families and sponsors come together is a beautiful reflection that we are all in this together.
